Bulk ship of the year

The Mitsui OSK Lines-operated bulk carrier Soma Maru has been awarded the title 'Bulk Ship of the Year' at the IBJ Awards 2014 held in Rotterdam on 17 November. The new ship type was commended for its versatility and environmental performance. The Liberian-registered Soma Maru serves for Tohoku Electric Power Co and was jointly developed by Sanoyas Shipyard at Osaka and MOL. The state-of-the-art coal carrier is of a wide-beam/shallow-draft design, incorporating various safety features and energy-saving specifications, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She measures 235m by 43m, with a depth of 20m, and was delivered in July 2014 by Mizushima Shipyard of Sanoyas Shipbuilding Corporation. She is a sister vessel to Akatsuki, delivered in February 2014.
