St Helena to be sold

St Helena Line announced on 11 April that it is to withdraw the passenger cargo ship RMS St Helena (see SM, April; pictured) from service in July and has appointed London ship broker C. W. Kellock & Co Ltd to handle her sale. Operated by St Helena Line Ltd (SHL) on behalf of the St Helena Government (SHG), she has been part of the Island's history for over a quarter of a century and provided the only regular means of access to the Island, 1,200 miles off Africa in the South Atlantic. The 6,767gt ship was built in the UK in 1990 specifically for the St Helena route and can accommodate 156 passengers in 56 cabins, as well as having a cargo capacity of 3,750cbm bale, and 92TEU. She is one of only four ships left in the world which has the right to carry the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) prefix. Her withdrawal is set to follow shortly after the opening of the first airport on St Helena on 21 May 2016.
