UK equipment manufacturer BCB International has released a projectile anti-piracy device, dubbed the 'Sea Stinger', which utilises compressed air to fire a line to entangle itself around the propellers of hostile craft approaching the vessel, thus incapacitating pirates before they get the chance to attempt an attack or illegal boarding. The Sea Stinger system was loosely modelled on land-based police 'stinger' systems, comprising spikes that are positioned across the road to burst the tyres of fugitive vehicles. The Sea Stinger operates at pressures up to 70bar and can shoot its line at a speed of 350m per second.
