School Project Brought USS Salem Home to Quincy

[When] USS Lawrence (DD 8) was laid down in 1889 and commissioned in 1903, [it] was the first of many U.S. Navy ships built by Fore River Ship & Engine Co., later Bethlehem Steel and later General Dynamics Quincy Shipbuilding. The yard moved from East Braintree to Quincy in 1902, and the first Navy ship built at the new location was the cruiser USS Des Moines (CL17). The yard built submarines, destroyers, cruisers, battleships and more, as well as many merchant ships and other vessels. After building five USNS 2nd Lt. John P. Bo-bo-class maritime prepositioning ships for the Military Sealift Command, the yard closed in 1986. People had a lot of pride in the shipyard and in the ships that were built over the years. When it shut down, it affected just about everyone.
