As the multiyear ice in the Arctic is decreasing, and more navigable water is remaining open for longer periods, the interest in providing naval presence in the extreme northern latitudes is heating up. The Northwest Passage is now relatively ice-free in the summer months, allowing large cruise ships and other vessels to transit.
