Many books on the Pacific island campaigns of World War Ⅱ focus on the exploits of individuals and small units. This book fills a void and gives the perspective from the operational level of war, at the division and corps level. The author discusses the Guadalcanal, Gilberts, Marshalls, Saipan and Okinawa campaigns in a standard format, describing the setting, planning, preparations, major units, commanders and battles. She analyzes the planning, intelligence, training, performance of technology, casualties, conduct of the commanders, lessons learned and the effects of the campaign on future operations. She compares the Marine Corps and Army approaches to the campaigns and discusses the attendant controversies, noting that the friction largely was overcome by cooperation and led to successful execution of war.
