The past 30 years have witnessed an economic miracle in China. Global market demand, vast arbitrage opportunities in labor and manufacturing and shrewd government policy have combined to propel unprecedented growth and wealth creation. But the country is also facing great challenges in managing and balancing economic growth and a population of 1.3 billion. Two of the greatest challenges are to provide healthcare to the entire population, most of which is rural and currently enjoys little or no coverage, and to increase the quality and efficiency of agricultural output in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner. Biotechnology will play a critical role in developing solutions to both sets of problems.
