Every meeting room I entered in the leading hospitals of Beijing and Shanghai was identical. In each one, overstuffed couches covered in floral patterns were set back against the walls, with the remainder of the room left bare. In interview after frustrating interview I sat on one of those couches, a translator at my side, and politely questioned a series of Chinese transplant surgeons, their faces as blank and neutral as the room around us. eliberately and patiently I would ask about the recent history of organ transplantation in China and about their own experiences.
