US Navy sources have revealed how Somali pirates were able to depart from the hijacked tanker Golden Nori while watched by coalition warships. "We allowed them to leave," a US Navy spokesman said. "As long as they left the crew safe and unharmed, then we let them go. The safety of the crew is our primary responsibility." A boarding team from USS Whidbey Island, which was on standby, found the crew of South Koreans, Burmese and Filipinos unharmed apart from minor cuts, scrapes and bruises. The US Navy supplied them with food, water, bedding and basic medical supplies.
