Athletes and officials dashing to and from Stratford for the 2012 Olympics must have been intrigued by this: a brand-new piece of timber-crafted medievalism perched high on richly-decorated legs at Aldgate, the eastern gateway of the City of London.Designed by Studio Weave and called 'Paleys upon Pilers' - that's 'Palace upon Pillars' in Middle English - it is a beguiling installation that recalls poet Geoffrey Chaucer's residence here from 1374 to 1386. Chaucer lived in rooms above the Aldgate itself and wrote of fantastical temples.
