Glitter manufactured containing at least 10%, and preferably greater than 50%, of its total composition that are made from recycled, renewable, compostable, biodegradable, or otherwise environmentally friendly materials that can be used for all applications. The present invention relates to glitter having greater than 10%, and preferably greater than 50%, recycled, renewable, compostable, biodegradable, or otherwise environmentally friendly components. The process involves choosing components that are recycled, renewable, compostable, biodegradable, or otherwise environmentally friendly to make a substrate and then converting this substrate into glitter. Glitter may be made from a clear substrate, metallized substrate, holographic substrate, iridescent substrate, coated substrate, or any other substrate that can be converted into glitter. Combinations of various substrates and colorants will result in a wide variety of substrates available for converting into glitter. The final substrate for a given product will have at least 10% and preferably greater than 50% of it's total composition that are made from recycled, renewable, compostable, biodegradable, or otherwise environmentally friendly materials. Glitter made from a coated substrate may also have a coating that has at least 10% and preferably greater than 50% of it's total composition that are made from recycled, renewable, compostable, biodegradable, or otherwise environmentally friendly materials. Glitter may have regular or irregular periphery and may be provided in a variety of shapes (e.g. circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, stars, random shapes, etc.) or a mixture of different shapes. The thicknesses of the substrates may range from 6 microns to 175 microns with the preferred range of thicknesses being 12 microns to 75 microns. Glitters converted from these substrates are then suitable for use in various applications, including, but not limited to, industrial, decorative, cosmetic, arts & crafts applications, etc.
