The horror film has proved to be one of the most consistently popular and the most disreputable of all the mainstream cinema genres. Since the beginning of the film business there has never been a time when horror films were not being produced in substantial numbers somewhere in the world and never a time when they were not being criticised, censored or banned. Many will be revolted by the treatment handed out to the unsuspecting actors who fall foul of the violence dished out in these movies, but there is a fascination for some in the greater and greater perversions that the film-makers bring to the genre.
