There was a time 40-odd years ago when sociology appeared to be taking over academia. It was the fastest growing discipline, and the largest single course in most of the new universities around the world. At the same time, much of academic philosophy seemed to be retreating into a narrow field of pure logic. Both these trends reversed, not entirely coincidentally, around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
