Costume designer and illustrator John Peacock has combined his knowledge of fashion and an interest in the evolution of dress with over 1,000 detailed drawings in this appealing reference book. Bravely commencing with "antiquity" - ancient Egypt to medieval Europe - Peacock has sourced a wide variety of existing books on costume to produce a more accessible and attractive "timeline" of children's clothing. Arranged in chronological order, from the earliest known records of Roman tunics to the prints and synthetic fabrics of the present day (2008), each section features brightly coloured sketches of popular outfits. Descriptions of the individual costumes are marked on a schematic layout at the end of each "era", thus allowing the illustrations to make a visual impact without cluttering the page with captions. There is also a chart at the end of the book showing, with basic outlines of the garments, how children's fashions have changed in shape and style, but simply leafing through the attractive illustrations allows for quick and fascinating comparisons.
