摘要

Sir Walter Scott lived and wrote during the age of Goethe. Though twenty years younger, Scott died only a few months after the giant of German letters himself passed away. Writing in the shadow of this titan on the continent, Scott's output was nonetheless staggering and his literary influence has been, arguably, almost as profound. Even so, while Goethe's work continues to enjoy considerable stature in world literary history and criticism, Scott's literary reputation seems to have diminished in comparison. The Edinburgh Companion to Sir Walter Scott admirably redresses this situation by breaking new critical ground and setting a solid foundation for further Scott studies.
