Historical Dictionary of South American Cinema

Europe and Hollywood have dominated film and film studies for the life of this field. The preface of this historical dictionary states that "This book is an attempt to raise regard for South American cinema to the level of that accorded the cinemas of the United States and countries in Europe" (p. (ⅹⅲ)), a worthy challenge and elegantly executed. Covering more than a dozen countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, Brazil and the three Guianas) and several languages, the work reaches back to the late 1890s for a truly historic and much-needed examination of the cinema of this region. The author teaches at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal, and he has also written about Canadian, African and Asian cinema.
