One simple way of representing biblical interpretation, and probably the interpretation of many scriptural sources and the authority and truth claims they make, is to see the process as one from literalism to theological inquiry (even epistemological skepticism). So we see, in Old Testament interpretation, a shift over time from seeing it literally as divinely created and inspired to various types of documentary criticism (though divine, it was after all written by human beings), form criticism (how parts of sources came and fit together) and then wider and hybrid approaches incorporating disciplines like sociology, cultural history and anthropology. In a real and ironic sense, recent years have seen a growing interest in and concern with interpretative literalism, linked as it is with ethnicity, cultural identity and geopolitical ideology.
