Twentieth-Century War and Conflict: A Concise Encyclopedia

This new paperback "concise encyclopedia" comprises articles relating to twentieth-century war and conflict reprinted from Wiley-Blackwell's five-volume The Encyclopedia of War, first published in 2012. The original set, also edited by Gordon Mattel, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Northern British Columbia and author of numerous books on modern warfare, the latest of which is The Month that Changed the World: July 2014 (Mattel, 2014), received wide critical acclaim. Choice made it one of its Outstanding Titles for 2013, while Booklist was emphatic stating: "(S)imply put, no reference tool currently in publication covers the topic of war with comparable inclusiveness; engaging, well-informed scholarship; and up-to-date analysis" (Anon, 2012). Our own lengthy review (RR 2012/296) was similarly positive, the reviewer reserving particular praise for Mattel's contribution: "you could swear the whole book was composed by the same hand: that is good editorship" (Kendall, 2012).
