This line lost its passenger service in 1965 but remained an important artery for coal trains from the Shirebrook area to Toton. Today, traffic is very sparse, with the two remaining collieries at Thoresby and Welbeck sending most of their output via Worksop instead of Toton.rnUntil the 1980s an intricate network of freight-only lines criss-crossed the Nottinghamshire coalfield, with Shirebrook forming a busy intersection between the north-south line from Worksop to Toton and the branch heading east to High Marnham power station. Today, the north-south line carries the Robin Hood line passenger service, while the High Marnham branch is still freight-only and serves Welbeck and Thoresby collieries. Welbeck is due for imminent closure, but Thoresby has been given a new lease of life thanks to a ￡55m investment scheme. Although High Marnham power station closed in 2003, Network Rail has revived the line to High Marnham as a test track for new on-track plant.
