Modifications to one of Greater Anglia's Class 379 EMUs which will allow it to run independently of overhead electrified wires have reached the test stage at the Bombardier works at Derby. 379013 has been experimentally fitted with batteries so that it can operate on non-electrified branches or on parts of the system where there are gaps between electrified sections. The unit is currently being trialled on the works test track prior to more extensive running on the main line.
