While riding my bike the other day, I got to thinking about the gains in new cycle technology that have been accomplished over the years. Some of the new technologies include: carbon fiber frames, aerodynamic bike frames, aerodynamic wheels, very sophisticated components, power meters and GPS. Older bike technology versus a new bike is no comparison. The newer bikes are faster and easier to ride. You still have to ride hills, fight wind and road hazards, but new technologies make it easier and are certainly more fun. This led me to reflect on the improvements that we have made with railway engineering technology during the past 37 years, since I've been in the industry.
