Improvement of customer satisfactionon East Japan Railway Company

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) is one of seven railway companies formed on April 1,1987 upon the division and privatization of the Japanese National Railways. The present situation of JR East is shown in Table 1. In 1993, the Company's shares were listed on domestic stock exchanges and sold to the public. Now 12.5 % of shares are held by a government agency. At present there are some restrictions imposed by the Act governing Passenger Railway Companies and the Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Act). For example, in fund procurement, taking on additional long-term loans and issuing of bonds requires the approval of the Minister of Land, Construction and Transport.
