On March 26 Northern Ireland Railways announced that CAF of Spain had been awarded a £105m contract to supply 20 three-car DMUs. These will be a development of the 23 Class 3000 DMUs supplied to N1R by CAF in 2005, with delivery scheduled for 2011-13.rnThis repeat order provides an indication of CAF's current sterling prices. At £1·75m per vehicle, the new trains compare with thernreported £2m per car tor the aborted project to lengthen TPE's Siemens Class 185 DMUs, and £1·4m per vehicle for the last batch of Bombardier Turbostars.rnBombardier, CAF and CSR Nanjing Puzhen of China are currently bidding for the 202 DMU vehicles being procured by DfT Rail (RB1338 p1). While CSR was expected to cut unit cost to under £1m per vehicle, industry insiders reportrnthat the use of standard European components, such as engines and transmissions, has driven up the price closer to the European builders, while still remaining significantly cheaper.
