Keep the guard on the train, says RMT

Senior industry insiders have told RBI that RMT is going considerably further in its campaign to protect the role of the guard than indicated by public statements, reports Tony Miles. The union is reported to have written to every train operator demanding that guards should control the energising, opening and closing of all doors, even if rolling stock modifications are needed.rnThis not only affects TOCs which currently do not employ guards, but also those where drivers open and close doors on the instructions of the guard. RMT has stated that if TOCs do not meet these demands, they will be in dispute with the union.
