Recently, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology introduced their latest robotic development -affectionately known as Kismet - to an unsuspecting public. Kismet - the name is Turkish for good fortune - has been hailed as a toy of the future by one of the researchers involved in the project. But despite the fun that has been had with the robot, its development, and that of its successor Kismet Mark II, has a far more serious side. The aim is to further understanding of artificial intelligence and take us one step closer to the "thinking, seeing, learning" machine: in fact, the truly cognisant robot many believe will be the norm in the future.
