Dallas in late August registered at a mind-numbing 103 degrees. But the meeting of the North Texas Chapter of the Designers Council was as cool as the other side of the pillow. The Dallas area Designers Council chapter invited me to sit on a panel to discuss the outsourcing of design jobs. Other members of the "Who Moved My Job?" panel were Charlie Capers, owner of Trilogy Circuits; Steve Thier, CAD manager at Raytheon; and Glenn Miner, senior product engineer at Benchmark Electronics and founding president of the Dallas Designers Council chapter. The event was moderated by Damon Oran of Direct Logix, a man who's never at a loss for words. Chapter President Dan Baumgartner leads one of the most active Designers Council chapters around. I had figured a dozen or so members might show up for the after-work panel and dinner. But almost 40 people attended, filling every seat in the meeting room at Piano's Southfork Hotel.
