Louis qualified as a podiatrist in 1966 at the Manchester Foot Hospital and School of Chiropody, and devoted the early years of his working life to the profession of podiatry teaching in the NHS. He was appointed as a research chiropodist with the Institute of Community Studies in 1966 until 1967. This was a major study funded by the Ministry of Health to establish the prevalence of foot pathology in England and Wales and culminated in the publication of "Trouble with Feet" by May Clarke. Louis' abilities were recognised at an early stage by Miss Dorothy Grant Nisbet, then the Head of the Manchester School, who appointed him firstly as a student teacher in 1967 and then in a full time junior teaching post with part-time study, which led to qualification by the award of the Teachers Certificate of the Society of Chiropodists.
