Bolivian gas and its vanishing markets

Construction of the 3,100 kilometer-long Gasbol pipeline tornlink gas fields in eastern Bolivia to the industrial heartlandsrnaround Sao Paolo in Brazil began in 1997, under a $2.2 billionrnjoint venture between Bolivia’s state oil firm YacimientosrnPetrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), Brazil’s Petrobrasrnand private investors, including BG, Shell and Total.rnUnder a sales contract between YFPB and Petrobras,rnBrazil agreed to buy up to 30 million cu m/d of gasrnfrom Bolivia, indexed to a basket of crude prices. Gasrnstarted to flow in 1999 and by the following year,rnBolivia was supplying more than a quarter of the gasrnconsumed in Brazil.
