Recession shifts psychosocial risks

Psychosocial risks such as violence and harassment and job insecurity have risen in the wake of the Europe-wide recession, although other risks have lessened, according to a major new report launched as part of the European Healthy workplaces manage stress campaign. The report shows that: 1. levels of job insecurity have risen, along with associated negative health outcomes 2. fewer people report working long hours or say that social support at work is lacking, although one-fifth of workers still work long hours or have irregular schedules 3. violence and harassment have increased, especially in workplaces undergoing restructuring. Nearly 80 per cent of companies across Europe are concerned about workplace stress and nearly 20 per cent say that violence and harassment is a serious concern.
