15 Tons of Contaminated Material Now Removed from Hanford Nuclear Site

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its contractors announced they now have disposed of 15 million tons of contaminated material from the Hanford nuclear site into the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF). The ERDF began operations in 1996 and is considered a critical element for removing contaminated material and providing for its safe disposal to prevent contaminants from reaching groundwater and the Columbia River, DOE said. The ERDF receives contaminated soil, demolition debris and solid waste from cleanup operations at the 586-square-mile Hanford Site in southeast Washington state.
