Treating electrically conductive waste (10) contaminated with nuclear fuel from a nuclear fuel handling facility, comprises: (a) immersing the waste in a molten salt to dissolve a contaminated surface layer of the waste in the molten sa and (b) filtering the molten salt to extract the nuclear fuel accumulated in it. The filtered molten salt is reused in the electrolysis process. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for performing the above method which comprises a molten salt electrolysis unit, a filter and a molten salt return line.
