Report shows where government's R&D funds go

Federal research and development dollars help universities advance general knowledge, support a range of government missions, train future scientists and engineers, and enhance economic growth in the communities where they operate. Despite the importance of these activities, according to the Rand Corporation, decision-makers face difficulty assessing and monitoring the size of the government's R&D investment and its changing profile over time. For this reason, Rand conducted a survey to provide an empirical basis for assessing the federal investment in university-based R&D. The survey's results are compiled in the report, "Vital Assets: Federal Investment in Research and Development at the Nation's Universities and Colleges," issued in June.
