U.S. is an S&E leader, but future is uncertain

The united states remains a world leader in research and development (R&D) and high technology production, but the future may not be so rosy. According to a report issued in May by the National Science Board (NSB), ongoing economic and workforce changes make the nation's outlook uncertain regarding its status as a leading producer and a net exporter of high-technology products and a global leader in R&D spending. "The United States is in a long-distance race to retain its essential global advantage in S&E [science and engineering] human resources and sustain our world leadership in science and technology," said NSB chair Warren Washington. "For many years we have benefited from minimal competition in the global [S&E] labor market, but attractive and competitive alternatives are now expanding around the world. We must develop more fully our native talent."
