Mining operations tend to leave the mine entrance surrounded by vast piles of debris, called mine tailings, after the product of interest (typically coal) has been removed. In the centuries since mining began, nobody has known what to do with these mountains of ugly and sometimes smelly tailings, except to leave them there.
