Nuclear safety research

The twenty-five OECD countries have an installed nuclear capacity of nearly 300GW(e), contributing about 20% to total electricity generation. The importance of continued safe operation is clear. Reducing safety research is a considerable temptation, but one which is monitored by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) through its Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations. The Committee's latest review of the levels of national safety research being undertaken in member countries was initiated in 1991 after it was judged appropriate to update its 1985 review. The latest conclusions were endorsed by the Committee in December 1993 and have now been published by OECD-NEA, Paris.
