Pakistan says it has broken ground on a new nuclear power plant to be built near the city of Karachi on the country's southwest coast. The new plant, to consist of two reactor units, will be built with Chinese assistance and will be about 40 kilometres west of Karachi, at the site of the single-unit Kanupp nuclear power plant, which began commercial operation in 1972. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) said the new plant will consist of two Chinese design ACP-1000 nuclear reactors with a total output of 2,200 megawatts. Completion is expected in 2019.
