An approved project to test an anthrax vaccine on baboons has been aborted by Burns Hargis, president of Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Stillwater. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology says the decision sets a "disturbing precedent".rnOSU rejects suggestions in news reports that Hargis bowed to pressure from animal-rights extremists. Steve McKeever, vice-president of research, told New Scientist that a key reason was that OSU had no experience of euthanasing primates.
