Death at SeaWorld starts with a chilling depiction of just that: the untimely end of orca trainer Dawn Brancheau. In 2010 I she was drowned at the marine park in Orlando, Florida, by Tilikum the killer whale. It is from this grisly starting point that David Kirby sets out to answer two questions: is captivity for human amusement good for orcas? And is it good for society? With a diverse cast ranging from scientists, animal-welfare advocates and the marine amusement industry, Kirby focuses on the lives of Naomi Rose, a marine biologist turned advocate, and SeaWorld orca trainer Jeff Ventre, who grows increasingly concerned about the ethics of his job.
