A dangerous embrace?

Few researchers in the history of psychology are as controversial as Harry Harlow. His most famous experiment was to socially isolate infant rhesus monkeys and give them a choice of two surrogate mothers: one made of bare wire that dispensed milk, and one of soft cloth that dispensed nothing. The monkeys most often put emotional comfort ahead of material needs, clinging near constantly to their cloth mothers.
