Ministers have released S1.3bn to fund more than 300 "shovel-ready" projects to restart the economy following the Covid-19 lockdown. They include the development of solar-powered railways, Coventry's Very Light Rail (VLR) scheme and new stations in Kent and Bristol. But the government shunned London mayor Sadiq Khan's pleas for money to repair Hammersmith Bridge which crosses the Thames. It was included on a list of shovel-ready projects in London he submitted to the government. The funding was announced by housing, communities and local government secretary Robert Jenrick who wrote to mayors and local business leaders in June asking for information about shovel-ready projects to restart the UK economy after the Covid-19 lockdown.
