Envisaged in the 1998 Defence Review, design work on the Queen Elizabeth (QE) class aircraft carriers commenced in 2009.These would be the largest ships ever for the Royal Navy; at about 70 m longer and, at 73m, twice as wide as an Invincible class aircraft carrier. HMNB Portsmouth was selected from a range of possible bases, but improvements would have to be made to the jetties, port infrastructure and the channel leading to the harbour.The approach channel was curving and only 270 yds at the widest, reducing to 200 yds at the harbour mouth.The approach would also have to avoid 2 forts, and the wreck site of the Mary Rose.
