The AWS had its beginnings almost 50 years ago in the failed TYPHON program. It started as a very challenging engineering development program, thought by many to be, like TYPHON, destined for failure. However, under the brilliant leadership of RADM Meyer, and with the hard work and creative spirit of thousands of individuals in government and industry over more than a decade, the pundits were proved wrong and the development program was a success. That development program produced four things.
