Surgeons make the stomach smaller and reroute the small intestine, reducing the body's ability to absorb nutrients from food. It is a profound reorganization of the digestive system. Yet recent studies suggest that a major portion of the weight loss triggered by bypasses - commonly 4.5-9.0 kg per month for the first year -may be attributable to changes in the gut microbiota that occur after surgery.
