Filling the Training Void

Canada's National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) has led to a boom in the Canadian shipbuilding industry that has not been seen, as BC Shipping News recently put it, "since the busy new build years of the Second World War." The C$38 billion (US$35 billion) investment is intended to yield 28 new large vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as more than 100 smaller vessels. However, the absence of trained specialists in Canada has led to project delays and the outsourcing of newly created Canadian jobs.
