£66 MILLION FUNDING FOR HEADBOLT LANE

£66 MILLION from the Transforming Cities Fund has been allocated to plans to extend the Merseyrail network from Kirkby to a new station at Headbolt Lane. The station would provide residents in the Northwood and Tower Hill areas of Kirkby with better access to the Merseyrail network. It forms part of plans to build a new rail linktoSkelmersdale, which would connect to the Merseyrail network via the Kirkby branch. The extension would take over part of the existing Kirkby to Wigan line, which is not electrified, with the terminus and interchange point between Merseyrail and Northern's service to Wigan moving to Headbolt Lane. DC third rail electrification beyond the current limit at Kirkby would be required as part of the project.
