Luton BC set to freeze 'non-essential' spending

Luton BC has become the third local authority in England to freeze non-essential spending. A council spokesman confirmed the local authority had halted all non-essential spending following last month's Spending Review. According to local newspaper reports, the freeze is also due to rising demand for council services, particularly for social care and housing. 'Taking all this into account and because the pressure on demand-led services is going to remain high it is absolutely vital we take swift and decisive action within the authority in order to bring spend back into line,' said chief executive Trevor Holden. 'I am certain we will navigate our way through this situation, but if we don't address it now it will only worsen our overall financial position.'
