There are few stories more appealing to the prejudices of the tabloid press than the idea of Brussels eurocrats outlawing cherished British institutions in pursuit of ever deepening union between the peoples of Europe. Such stories are usually bogus and are the product of lazy journalism. However, journalists are a bit like some parts of the dairy industry. They are in the business of servicing already over-supplied markets. The products they supply are stories - and old stories that appeal to deep-seated preconceptions usually sell well.
