"The Mediterranean Air War" unravels the big picture of air warfare in a heretofore obscure and fractured theater. Explaining conflicting national political goals, strategic military plans and obstacles, the author describes the evolution and growth of tactical, strategic and unconventional airpower and compares winning and losing employment strategies. Initially, airpower's tactical operations in North Africa aimed at gaining air superiority, then improvised British Eighth Army support. Later, as American long-range heavy bombers became available, strategic bombing campaigns were implemented to drive Italy from the war, pin German troops in southern Europe, and deny Germany Romania's oil production. Lastly, airpower improvisation was instrumental in supporting Tito's unconventional Balkan warfare.
