The US Army has formally entered a low-rate production phase for its AH-64D APACHE Block III helicopter - a next generation attack aircraft with increased power, lift, manoeuvrability, communication with unmanned systems and hard-landing ability. The US Army's 22 October contract with Boeing covers production of 51 Block III helicopters, with the first one slated to arrive in October of next year. In a collaborative effort with its industry partner Boeing, the Army plans to build as many as 10 new aircraft every month by 2014. In other APACHE news, the helicopter is one step closer to realizing secure Internet Protocol based networking as the Lockheed Martin AMF JTRS team, including BAE Systems,General Dynamics,Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon, begins integration activities of its Airborne and Maritime/Fixed Station Joint Tactical Radio System (AMF JTRS) with the AH-64D LONGBOW APACHE. This marks the first time an aircraft programme begins work on AMF JTRS SDR interfaces.
