Freshwater algae from the Mattagami Formation (Albian), Ontario: Paleoecology, botanical affinities, and systematic taxonomy

The Mattagami Formation (Albian), in the Noose River Basin, James Bay Lowlands, Ontario, consists of carbonaceous shales and silt stones, lignites and well sorted quartz sand. These sediments represent a low gradient fluvial-paludal depositional system in an iso- lated intracratonic basin, which was deposited over 800 kilometers from the nearest marine sediments of the western interior. A rich terrestrial palynoflora, including a diverse collection of fossil algae with botanical affinities to modern freshwater algae, Were recovered from the Mattagami Formation.
